Assumptions used

Review the inputs and limits behind this planning estimate.

VAT calculations usually involve three numbers: the net price before tax, the VAT amount, and the gross price after VAT. When you add VAT, the tax amount is calculated from the net price. When you remove VAT, the net amount is worked backwards from a VAT-inclusive gross price.

This tool uses an editable VAT rate so it can support standard, reduced or custom scenarios. It does not decide whether a product or service is taxable, exempt, zero-rated or subject to reverse charge rules. Those details can depend on country, product category, customer type and invoice context.

For shopping, quotes and quick price checks, the calculator helps you confirm the math. For formal invoices, accounting, cross-border VAT or tax reporting, verify the applicable rate and rules with official VAT guidance or a qualified accountant.

How this calculator works

To add VAT, the tool multiplies the net amount by the VAT rate and adds the tax to the original amount.

To remove VAT, the tool divides the gross amount by one plus the VAT rate to estimate the net amount.

The calculator does not decide which VAT rate applies; you choose the rate and should verify it for formal use.

Example calculation

Example: adding 20% VAT to EUR 100 gives EUR 20 VAT and EUR 120 gross. Removing 20% VAT from EUR 120 gives EUR 100 net and EUR 20 VAT.

Important limitation

This calculator is a planning estimate only. It does not replace official tax, payroll, accounting, legal or government advice.

Does this know every European VAT rule?

No. It calculates from the rate you enter and does not decide whether VAT applies to a product, service or transaction.
