Definition
A security deposit (or rental deposit) is an amount paid to the landlord at the start of a tenancy as protection against damage or unpaid rent. It is held for the duration of the tenancy and returned at the end if there is no damage or rent arrears. In most European countries, deposits range from 1 to 3 months rent.
